Biography
Charlotte Bouckaert is beeldend kunstenaar, scenograaf en performance artiest. De fascinatie voor fotografie, voor de impact van het stilstaand beeld is vaak het uitgangspunt voor haar theaterpraktijk. Het feit dat een foto een moment in de tijd stolt fascineert, maar lijkt ook systematisch rebellie bij haar op te roepen. In haar performances manipuleert ze foto’s zo, dat niet het gestolde moment onze volle aandacht krijgt, maar wel de hele actie die tot dat moment heeft geleid. Charlotte haar theaterpraktijk ging van start in 2012, in samenwerking met Kunstenwerkplaats Pianofabriek en Beursschouwburg met de performance ‘The photographer left, he told the truth’ en ontving daarvoor de Dioraphte Prijs op Festival Cement.
Van 2014 tot 2019 maakte ze deel uit van het collectief ‘Atelier Bildraum’, waarbij ze samen met Steve Salembier verschillende theatervoorstellingen maakte. Hun eerste werk samen ‘Bildraum’ won in 2015 de Big in Belgium Award op Theater aan Zee en in 2016 de Total Theatre Award op het Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Daarna volgden de voorstellingen ‘In between violet and green’ en ‘Icon’, die zowel in binnen als buitenland worden getoond.
Sinds 2019 richt ze zich weer tot haar eigen praktijk dat videowerk, performances en installaties inhoudt. Werk waarin Charlotte als een choreograaf van het statische beeld, opeen speelse en ambachtelijke manier de verwondering van het kijken tracht te herontdekken.

In residentie 11 seconds

11 seconden, de tijd voor een kunstwerk. In verschillende kwantitatieve studies hebben wetenschappers onderzocht hoeveel tijd bezoekers in musea spenderen aan de collectie, de tentoonstelling en aan individuele kunstwerken, en welke factoren die die duur beïnvloeden. De gemiddelde tijd besteed aan een kunstwerk ligt tussen 10 en 15 seconden.
In ’11 seconds’ wil Charlotte Bouckaert samen met haar publiek 1 foto bekijken gedurende 1 uur, de duur van een voorstelling. Die foto toont het Solomom R. Guggenheim Museum in New-York. Een generiek buitenaanzicht van het museum op een heldere dag, gefotografeerd van de overkant van 5th Avenue.

The stage: a large white horizontal canvas, with everyday objects and performer Marie De Corte on it. A relationship develops between the silent, still objects and the mobile and expressive body.
What if the objects start moving; hesitate, stagger, walk away. What if there is a meeting between Cézanne’s apples and a few Morandi vases. What if De Corte starts a conversation with a pear.
In You are an Object to me, her latest creation, Charlotte Bouckaert (11 seconds) encourages us to approach the still lifes that are casually created in our living rooms with amazement. To switch off our automatic and routine gaze, the greatest enemy of looking. Man and object leave traces in time. What are the contours that life leaves behind?

Over the past 10 years, Charlotte Bouckaert has developed a visual language at the intersection of visual art and live performance. After 11 seconds, her latest theatre performance, in which one photo is the guiding principle of a playful association of thoughts about (looking at) art, this time the still life in painting is Bouckaert’s starting point. She questions the stagnation and lifelessness of the genre. You are an Object to me focuses on looking as a conscious and inspired action.
