CCHA/Krokusfestival zoekt 3 kunstenaars voor dit residentiële internationale artistieke laboratorium in het kader van PUSH+

Wat is PUSH+ ?

PUSH+ is een door Creative Europe gesteund project van leadpartner Imaginate (Schotland) samen met Krokusfestival (België), The Ark (Ierland), Aaben Dans (Denemarken), Scenekunstbruket (Noorwzegen) en geassocieerde partner Bangkok International Children’s Festival (Thailand). PUSH+ wil zowel de dialoog over als de creatie van nieuwe voorstellingen rond drie belangrijke thema’s in het werk voor jong publiek stimuleren. Deze thema’s zijn Home, Failure en Different Bodies. Dit zijn thema’s die ons aanzetten meer risico’s in ons werk als maker en programmeur te bouwen omdat ze connecteren met het leven van kinderen én omdat ze ondervertegenwoordigd zijn in het werk dat we momenteel op de podia zien. Binnenkort (december) kan u alle info vinden op de PUSH+ website.

Op dit moment vindt u alvast de eerste info op de website van imaginate en op de website van het krokusfestival. Deze open call geldt voor het eerste artistieke labo, HOME, dat plaats zal vinden in Edinburgh (aankomst 23 januari, vertrek 1 februari 2019).

Informatie over het HOME LAB

In het HOME Lab komen 15 kunstenaars uit 5 landen samen om artistieke ideeën te ontwikkelen rond dit thema in hun werk voor jong publiek. Er wordt gewerkt van 23 januari tot 1 februari 2019. Gedurende deze 8 dagen is zowel de persoonlijke inbreng van de kunstenaars belangrijk als de ideeën die de volgende vragen oproepen: (in het Engels omdat dat de voertaal van het Lab zal zijn)

• Does home have a different meaning for children? How are we impacting on children by portraying home in theatre and dance as a place of cosiness and safety where this is not their experience of life?
• How does our experience of place create identity and belonging, both of which are essential to an understanding of home?
• How much is a sense of home connected to ‘physical’ space or place andnotions of permanence. What is it to live in the middle spaces wheresometimes nowhere feels fully like home?
• Is wherever I lay my hat, my home? privilege, assumption, exclusion?
• How does our relationship to our environment – built and natural – affectand inform our sense of self, place and home?
• How do experiences of migration inform the place-making that is involvedin making a home?
• Do we really know who lives in our cities as immigration itself diversifies,with immigrants from new countries moving in, resulting in an increasingand/or changing range of nationalities?
• Do elements of our home affect the art we make – landscape, language,culture, bodily expressions, rituals, communal storytelling, history?
• What are the non-permanent and non-human aspects / qualities of home?

PUSH+ verkent niet alleen thema’s maar wil ook onderzoeken welke presentatievormen gebruikt kunnen worden: Participatory, Site-specific en Intergenerational. Door deze vormen willen we, zowel kunstenaars als organisatoren, aanzetten om out of the box te denken en te werken als het om connectievormen met een jong publiek betreft. We vragen u in uw ideeën over het thema ook na te denken over de presentatievormen die u kunnen boeien.

Het HOME LAB zal drie dagen verblijven in Wiston Lodge (a charity housed in aformer Victorian Hunting Lodge built in the 1870s). Dat betekent dat er zowel indoors gewerkt kan worden, maar eer ook heel veel tijd en ruimte is voor ‘walks and talks’ op het heerlijke platteland. Terug in Edinburgh wordt er verder gewerkt in Royal Lyceum Theatre Rehearsal Room, waar de eerste ideeën verder ontwikkeld kunnen worden door extra input van externe kunstenaars en specialisten. De PUSH+ partners sluiten aan bij het LAB op dinsdag 29 januari. Het HOME LAB voorziet een welkomstdiner op 23 januari, een vrije dag in Edinburgh op zondag 27 januari en een afscheidsdiner met alle kunstenaars en partners op 31 januari.

Lab Leaders

PUSH+ labs zijn geen masterclasses noch workshops, maar wel interactieve artistieke research labs waar de inhoudelijke input door de kunstenaars cruciaal is. Toch vragen we bij elk LAB aan een kunstenaar/organisatie om vanuit hun expertise ‘leiding’ te geven aan het LAB. Voor het HOMER Lab zijn dat:

Wild Journeys – an organisation based in Mull who create and lead outdoorjourneys and experiences for individuals and groups. Wild Journeys works withImaginate to offer a range of artist walks and retreats for the young audiencessector in Scotland. Wild Journeys will lead us in outdoor activities at Wiston Lodge, a space to explore our connection with landscape and where we call ‘home’.

Luke Pell (Artist Facilitator) – Fascinated by detail, nuances of time, texture, memory and landscape Luke Pell is an artist living in Scotland. Maker, curator, dramaturg, he collaborates with other artists and organisations imagining alternative contexts for performance, participation and discourse that might reveal wisdoms for living. Noticing threads that weave between people and place his work takes form as intimate encounters, poetic objects, installationsand environments – choreographies – for physical and virtual spaces. Luke will facilitate the Lab, bringing together different artistic ideas, external input and participants’ needs to create a thread throughout the time.

Informatie over het selectieproces

Een drievoudig panel zal voor CCHA/Krokusfestival de selctie maken voor de drie Belgische kunstenaars die kunnen participeren aan het HOME LAB. Dat panel bestaat uit Gerhard Verfaillie (directeur CCHA, artistieke leiding Krokusfestival), Beatrice Henckaerts (programmeur theater en scholen CCHA) en een artiest die participeerde aan PUSH (de ‘voorloper’ van PUSH+). Het resultaat van hun beslissing wordt op vrijdag 9 november bekend gemaakt. CCHA/Krokusfestival kan drie artiesten afvaardigen in het HOME LAB waar ze, samen met 3 Noren, 3 Denen, 3 Ieren en 3 Schotten zullen samenwerken. Kunstenaars ontvangen een fee van €1.000. Transportkosten in België worden vergoed, wij boeken internationale vluchten en regelen transport in Schotland. Uiteraard wordt er ook voorzien in accommodatie. In Wiston Lodge (24-26 januari) worden lunch en diner voorzien. Voor de andere dagen voorzien we een per diem.

Home Residency (10 – 23 June 2019, Hasselt, België)

Na elk PUSH+ LAB wordt aan een deel van de deelnemende kunstenaars een residentie van 2 weken aangeboden. De geselecteerde artiesten kunnen op die manier ideeën uit het LAB verder ontwikkelen tot een work-in-progress. Ze worden daarvoor vergoed en kunnen ook rekenen op inhoudelijke en technische ondersteuning. De HOME RESIDENTIE voor 4 kunstenaars vindt plaats in HET LAB in Hasselt,tussen 10 en 23 juni 2019. HET LAB is een nieuw residentieel artistieklabo/werkplek in Hasselt waar tijd en ruimte is voor onderzoek,procesontwikkeling en productie van voorstellingen voor jong publiek.: “This will allow the artists to research and develop their ideas in a quiet and safe environment while making use of the technical infrastructure of CCHA, if needed. CCHA/Krokusfestival will be closely connected to the residency both interms of production arrangements (organisation, production, venues, logisticalneeds) and dramaturgical feedback. We will discuss with the artists all possibilities and opportunities to connect them to our network of schools, children, parents and invite them to meet local artists and see shows.”

FAQs

• What kind of artists are you looking for? We are looking for artists involved in making theatre and dance, ideally if you have made work for young audiences before or can share with us your motivation for making work for them. We would like to find a group of artists at different stages of their career although due to the intensity of an international residency, it is unlikely to be suitable for artists still studying or who have very recently graduated. We have included designers, musicians and filmmakers in previous PUSH LABs so we are open to include a wide range of artists. Ultimately, if you have experience in leading the creation of performance for children, or have a strong desire to do so using your artform, then we would like to hear from you.
• What information should I include in my application?We are looking for artists who are excited about creating theatre and dance for children and can show this through work they have creatively led or be eninvolved in. We would love to see examples of your work (images, production copy, film clips, reviews etc) so include them in your application. We are also looking for artists who have a genuine interest in the Lab topic, who have interesting perspectives and ideas with a strong line of enquiry.
• Is there a word count/time limit?While there isn’t a word limit for your answers (or time limit forfilmed/recorded ones) we would ask you to consider the panel and think about concise answers. Think about the key facts/opinions/ideas you want the panel to know and the best way for them to be clear and not lost in paragraphs of information.
• How will the panel assess the applications? The panel will talk through each application thinking about these key criteria: Quality of ideas around the topic of Home, and how they intersect with theatre and dance for young audiences. Track record of work as an artist. Proven interest in theatre and/or dance for young audiences. Potential impact of this Lab. This means we are interested in hearing about your artistic work and what interests you. Tell us about what inspires you about the topic of Home and what your main interest in exploring this would be. We are not looking for academic essays or perfectly written English, focus on getting your ideas acrossand who you are as an artist.
• Do all artists have to stay in the LAB accommodation? Yes, all the participants will be booked into the same accommodation. This is to allow all the LAB participants to live together for a week, to facilitate deeperdiscussion and opportunities to get to know each other and the LAB leaders.During the LAB we will stay in two locations: 23 Jan; 26 Jan – 1 Feb: we will stay in 2-bedroom self-catering apartments in the centre of Edinburgh. All artists will have their own room sharing an apartment with one other person. 24 – 25 Jan: we will stay in dormitory-style rooms at Wiston Lodge with a mixture of double, single and bunk beds. If any of this is a problem for you, or you have specific needs that you would like to talk to us about, please get in touch with us or let us know in your application.
• Do I have to be available for all the dates from 23 Jan – 1 Feb? Yes, we require full attendance. Artists should arrive in Edinburgh on Wednesday 23 January by 7pm for a welcome meal and stay until Friday 1 February, which is a travel day.
• How many places are there? There are 15 places in total for this LAB with 3 places for artists based in Belgium. 3 artists will be selected by each of our project partners in Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Denmark. A selection process will take place for each of the three LABs so it won’t be the same artists taking part in all three.
• Can I apply for more than one Lab as I’m interested in more than one topic? Yes, you can apply for more than one LAB though priority will be given to those who haven’t taken part in a previous one. If you are really interested in other topics and are not selected for this LAB, you are welcome to apply for the otherLABs.
• Can I apply if I haven’t met with CCHA / Krokusfestival before? Yes, we would encourage all theatre and dance artists interested in the topic and work for young audiences to apply.
• Can I apply for this LAB if I’m not based in Belgium? Priority will be given to artists based, and making work in, BELGIUM. If you would like to apply from other countries please contact us before applying. If you are based in Scotland, Ireland, Norway or Denmark you can contact us to be put in touch with our partner in your country.
• How accessible is the LAB? Both the LAB venue and the artist accommodation are fully accessible and we welcome applications from artists with a disability.
